Designing a heads-up-display to
solve distraction free driving.
Everyday, 9 people die from distracted driving. Exploride improves road safety by keeping
users' eyes on the road through an automotive Heads-up-display (HUD)
My Role
I have joined Exploride in early 2016 as the Head Of Design to create a design strategy and provide direction on product design so that we can take the first MVP product to market and test it with thousands of pre-ordered customers.
A team of 10 motivated and capable engineers had almost figured out the technology (Optical engineering), but no one was involved in thinking holistically about the product experience, which would solve actual user problems. Hence, the founding team members spoke with me and I joined their mission of solving distraction free driving.
My responsibilities
My primary responsibilities included defining the first roadmap with product management and engineering, staffing the effort with the right scale of UX direction, including user research, and aligning the team's objectives with those of key stakeholders. To assure the success of the team in this design-driven initiative.
What is Exploride
Exploride is a stand-alone device that can be mounted on the dashboard of any vehicle, allowing users to see through the transparent frame with sufficient distance between eyes and user interface, to resolve the distraction issue and it looks like (on your left đ) this and some of the notable features were:

User Research
After reviewing the user survey and talking with 14 pre-ordered Exploride users, I discovered that removing their eyes and hands off the road to check or modify maps/location or change their favorite music track on their car's touch screen device makes them
feel vulnerable and unsafe.
Wireframe & Flows
Based on the user stories and flows, we had enough information to start working on the wireframes.
Every time we had a flow completed, we would make a quick prototype and test it with real users to make sure it worked the way they expected it.
MAPS
Designed maps with a simple layout and reduced the transparency of any unnecessary side roads and walkways.
MUSIC PLAYER
With Exploride, driving is all about relaxing and having a great time,
because it brings you your favorite songs. Itâs time to leave those tense
muscles at home, turn that Music Player on, create your playlist and rock the road!
NOTIFICATIONS
Itâs high time you stopped missing from your appointments! Exploride is here and it will
sync with your mobile phoneâs calendars in order to show you all the reminders you need.
STOCK PRICES
While you are stuck in jam or leaving for office, Exploride can give you information on your stock.
You definitely donât want to miss todayâs stock price update which you bought last week.
INCOMING CALL
Be it your boss, your mom or your wife, you have someone calling you at least at every half an hour.
And while on the road, you do not have the luxury of picking up the phone. With Exploride, you donât even
have to push a button, a simple hand gesture and voice commands will do â either if you want to answer or reject the call.
MESSAGING
This was one of the toughest problems to solve, because the text size is so small and you definitely cannot read while driving.
As a solution, we created a very simple UI which allows the message to be read to you by Exploride and the replying is made via voice.
VOICE
While driving, you can talk to Exploride and it will give you the information you need. âHow can I help you today?â
is the question which appears on the screen in order to help you find the perfect answer to every question.
