WALA

Wala is probably one of the most practical Mobile Apps in India.
This is because it offers you access to buy the needed item from a very wide range of products (retail) and the possibility of
resorting to different services meant to make your life easier. Everything from the comfort of your own home.

My Role

As the Designer of Wala, I had to think the entire concept of the App from scratch. I knew from the very beginning that it was meant for locals, so I wanted it to be as simple as possible – both in terms of visuals and language.

In order to make the UX as friendly as possible, I resorted to local expressions such as ”sabzi” and chose to use plain, concrete images instead of icons. This is because images have the great capacity of expressing themselves to the user.

Wireframes & Flows

Wala was a rather large project, as it encompassed both Product & Service selling. This is why the wireframes created were
numerous and distinct, in order to help express all the possible buying & selling opportunities.

Every type of product or service was linked to different kind of information. If apple buying, for instance,
did not require much information, investing in a more expensive product would need
multiple pictures, details and maybe reviews in order to convince the buyer to take action.

During my work, I have created both B2B and B2C wireframes and put a lot of thought into it. First,
I have created the Seller Process wireframes and then the Consumer ones.

Final Product Design

The final design of Wala was meant to be intuitive and easy to use. Visually, I combined the
brand color – orange, a bold nuance, with two non-colors – black and white.

First Impression

Once you sign into the App, you see these two big columns, represented by Retail on the right and Services on the left. As I mentioned before, I resorted to pictures instead of icons because I wanted to give the app a more local feeling and human touch.

Store Details

The great idea behind Wala is that although you are resorting to online purchase, you can fully trust your choice. This is because there is a section where you can read plenty of information about the provider: a short detail, offerings, discounts and even reviews. There! Now you don’t have to worry about online shopping anymore!

Filters

Online shopping is easier than you thought – either we think about products or services. With Wala , you can apply every filter you need in order to find the perfect product.

The type of existing filters vary depending on the sought product or service. If you are searching for sneakers, for example, you can search by brand, by price or even by distance. If you are searching for services, on the other hand, you should search by pricing, rating and distance.

Ordering

As the rest of the App, the ordering system of Wala is very simple. You just have to fill in your delivery date, address, payment method and you are ready to go.

In order to create this part of the App, we delivered a case study which showed us that India was a cash society. In this way, we found out that because most of the orders were to be paid cash, it was very difficult for the ones delivering to carry the right amount of cash all the time.

This is where we had to innovate and introduced an idea which was by that time a novelty – the special cash button. This would tell the seller how much cash he should carry in order to give the customer the right amount of the remaining money.
